Brazil's energy storage market is expected to reach 71.8 GWh by 2034, with behind-the-meter installations dominating the market share at 45% and exempting grid connection permits.
market is expected to attract $14.7 billion in investment by 2034, reaching a cumulative capacity of 71.8 GWh. Behind-the-meter installations will account for 45%, followed by the reserve capacity market and off-grid systems. This study does not consider the transmission and distribution market and the additional potential of distributed generation.
Consumers and businesses are actively driving market development, without waiting for specific regulations. are expected to contribute 25% of installed capacity growth between 2025 and 2034. By 2034, batteries will account for 6%, or 19 GW, of the country's total installed capacity of 333 GW. This is driven by a projected 28% decline in battery asset prices, with installed costs falling from $1,200 per kilowatt-hour in 2026 to $750 per kilowatt-hour in 2034. Nearly 800 MW of capacity is already installed, including both off-grid and grid-connected projects, such as Vale's 10 MWh project in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro State.
ABSAE President Marcus Frassitz emphasized that public policy discussions have been slow, but the market is already taking action. Guilherme Nizzoli, consulting manager at NewCharge, noted that connection projects are already underway in states such as Bahia, Pernambuco, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Santa Catarina. He noted that behind-the-meter models can save 25% to 30% through peak-valley price differentials. While regulations are unclear, they are not an obstacle. Market segments include 32.3 GWh of behind-the-meter customers, 30.2 GWh of front-of-meter reserve capacity, and 9.3 GWh of off-grid systems. Additional potential lies in transmission and distributed generation.
